Guide to Low Carb Foods

Low carb shakes are the best way to eat a nutritious low carb meal when you don't have time to cook. Shakes are better than bars since the proteins used are usually of better quality and the total carb count is lower. The only problem with low carb meal replacement shakes is choosing a product that will fill you up and provide a nutritious meal. Use the checklist below as a guide to make sure the product you use or are shopping is a quality product worth your money.

Shopping Checklist

  • Your low carb shake should contain at least 20 grams of a whey-casein protein blend per serving. When combined, whey and casein provide a time-released meal that is absorbed over a period of hours. Clinical studies show whey-casein blends to be more effective than whey protein alone for fat loss and building muscle.
  • Make sure your shake has healthy fats. Each serving should contain 10-15 grams of mono and polyunsaturated fatty acids. The best products will have added omega 3 fatty acids too. These fats keep you full between meals, improve cholesterol levels, and help you lose weight.
  • Make sure the total carb count is low. While obvious to most people this characteristic still bears mentioning. Total carbohydrate count should be between 0-6 grams. This amount of carbs will keep your diet on track and allow you to eat more nutrient dense carbs at other times of the day.
  • Last but not least, the shake you choose should mix easily with a spoon or shaker bottle in water and taste great. One tip for selecting a great tasting shake is to look for sucrolose on the ingredients label. Brands that use sucrolose as a sweetener often taste the best, as it doesn't have the funny aftertaste of other artificial sweeteners.

Low Carb Diets

The popularity of low carb diets is affecting the sale of bread and similar foods reports the National Bread Leadership Council. A study conducted by the council shows that 63% of US consumers are eating less bread than they were a year ago. Expect this number to further increase in the future as low carb dieting becomes even more popular. As a result bread, cereal, and pasta companies are developing low carb breads, cereals, and pasta. Fast food restaurants are on board too. Subway, the popular sandwich franchise is one of the first to promote low carb meals with sandwiches whose rolls only have 8 grams of carbohydrate.

You can cover your low carb diet needs with low carb breads, pastas, brownie mixes and more. Add these foods to your low carb diet and you'll never feel the need to give in to your cravings for high carb
